Daily Brushing and Flossing
Although it may have been awhile since you had a cavity, there is still a risk due to dry mouth–which occurs because of common prescription medications.
Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles and a toothpaste with fluoride. Getting between the teeth is important, and brushing cannot do it all. Try a pre-threaded dental floss or water flosser if the traditional floss spool is difficult for you. Also, an ADA-approved mouthwash is also a wise addition to get at hidden plaque and bacteria.
Regular Dentist Check-ups
Don’t wait until you have pain to go to the dentist. As you age, you will have less feeling in the nerves inside the mouth and there are various forms of gum disease and oral cancer that can advance beyond help before the pain becomes apparent. By then, it will be more expensive and difficult to treat.
When you go for your check-up bring a list of your medications, medical conditions, info about your doctors, emergency contacts, insurance/Medicaid, and don’t forget to bring your dentures if you have them.
Two More Tips – Drinking and Smoking
Some seniors have grown up drinking from wells with fluoride in the water and have benefited from the experience. While there are fewer wells around, you can keep that benefit by continuing the practice. Lastly, if you are a smoker, stop. It’s never too late to quit, and it will reduce many dental issues and diseases.
